Staging

“I began staging ballets while I was still dancing with the New York City Ballet, and I’ve continued to share Mr. Balanchine’s choreography with passionate and dedicated dancers ever since. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with major ballet companies, universities, and pre-professional schools. Each time I stage one of his ballets, I learn something new. Even if I’ve staged a ballet multiple times, Mr. Balanchine always has something for me to discover—whether it’s in the steps, the music, or the historical context in which the work was created. I’m committed to keeping Balanchine’s ballets alive and relevant, and I love connecting his timeless art to today’s world.”

— Deborah Wingert

“If afforded the opportunity to participate in a master class or a workshop with Deborah Wingert, there should be no hesitation. I have witnessed her magic with my students. She has the innate ability to allow students to feel excitement as they explore the rigors, demands, technique, and beauty of classical ballet. I also witnessed her at work as a répétiteur for the Balanchine Trust. Her respect for the artists and their director was as impressive as her command of the choreography. Ms. Wingert made the work accessible while keeping it within the framework of the Balanchine style.”

Maurice Brandon Curry (Executive Artistic Director, Eglevsky Ballet)

“Deborah is one of a kind. She treats everyone with kindness and respect, making the working environment positive, healthy, and professional. I felt safe enough to be vulnerable and take bigger risks in my dancing. She communicates clear expectations to dancers and sets choreography clearly and efficiently. Deborah keeps to ballet tradition and uses imagery and descriptive corrections which are up to date with dance medicine and kinesiological research. Most importantly, she reminded us to always find moments of joy in dancing and life. Anyone who gets the opportunity to work with her is extremely lucky."

Lauren Stenroos (Cleveland Ballet- Founding Company Dancer and Rehearsal Director)

“Deborah’s enthusiasm and love for ballet made every class both challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. Under her guidance, I learned Balanchine's technique and performed the both male leads in Serenade and the pas de deux “Embraceable You” from Who Cares. These performances and the preparation leading up to them had a profound impact on me, particularly her approach to musicality which I've been striving to emulate throughout my career as a dancer.”
